Our speaker this week will be Brandon Baca, CEO of Attack Poverty. He is a non-profit visionary leader with strong entrepreneurial and organizational skills. He enjoys collaborative partnerships, ground level community-based development, telling stories of life change, and being a catalyst for transformation. Over the past 25+ years he has gained experience through full-time work in the university setting, as a pastor, and local/international non-profits.
A graduate of Houston Baptist University with a degree in Communication and Christianity, Brandon continues to serve in multiple capacities with his community as a youth mentor, non-profit consultant, executive coach, and serves on the board of other networks and non-profits. Previously He served on the HBU Alumni Association Board as well as a founding member of Fort Bend Recovers, a long-term Recovery network of collaborative organizations and agencies in Fort Bend County. Brandon has been awarded the Community Builder Award, Distinguished Alumnus award from his Alma mater, is a graduate of Center for Houston’s Leadership Forum, and is a graduate of the Fort Bend Leadership Forum. Currently, Brandon leads Attack Poverty as the Chief Executive Officer. In this role he provides vision, leadership, and guides the development and implementation of strategic operational objectives alongside board leadership. Brandon is a native Texan from Fort Bend County, has been married to his wife Sarah Beth for 23 years and they have three children.
We were fortunate to have this Rotarian Of the Month join our club in 2019. He one of the most active memberships of our club, and is always there to support our programs, whether that be club meetings, social events or community projects - he is simply passionate about serving our community, and we are lucky to have him! Here are some interesting facts: he was an Eagle Scout back in '66, and later was a Cub Scout Cubmaster. He was also an all-around coach (always had a heart to support others) for soccer, baseball and basketball. He graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy. He lived in exotic and excited places like Dubai (UAE) and Cairo (Egypt)! He helped design and build six offshore supply boats. Then until 2020 he ran a health insurance company, which in part helped explain all the confusing options of the ACA to people, and finding the best solutions for them. He has a wonderful wife, Lynn, who could not thank more for being such an amazing support for him, and allowing him to spend so much time for our club and community. He is currently our Membership Chair, where has raised the bar for any Rotary Club in terms of welcoming new members, and is always prepared with a welcome package for them. He also helped set up and organize the Google Drive, which has a wealth of information an is a critical resource for our club. The Rotarian of the Month is: Dean Clark!
Ramesh Lalwani is our next new club member. He is retired from the working life but has been in rotary for 28 years in St Thomas Virgin Islands. He couldn’t wait to get started volunteering for the club that he and his wife volunteered for the Toys for Tots project and did a great job helping. Stop by and say hello next time you see him at a club meeting as he will be a regular attender.
You get to enjoy your pie and eat it too through this year's Pies for Polio Fundraiser! K-Kaye's Cooking is being awesome in partnering with us and will be donating $10 from each pie sale toward helping us contribute to Rotary International's global campaign to eradicate polio. (Through the order form, you can always tack on more of a monetary donation, or bypass pies and donate just to the fundraiser.)
The fundraiser goes until December 15th. Pie orders will be picked up during the December 20th Rotary Club meeting. You also got an email notice about this – use the form attached to it to place your order and/or donate, and follow the prompts on how to make your payment.
It is a pretty sweet deal ...pun intended.
