August Rotarian of the Month –Rick Smith

This Rotarian has been with the the Sugar Land Rotary club for 22 years, and became a Paul Harris Fellow in just 3 years! He was our President in 2014, and is an incredibly important part of our club, helping organize many of our events, and can always be counted on to help out when there is a need. The community is very lucky to have such a wonderful person and Rotarian serving them, and we as a club owe a great deal of gratitude to him. The Rotarian of the Month is: Rick Smith! I would also like to acknowledge Rick's wife, Kimberly. Kimberly is a Rotarian at heart, and her tireless work to support the club and all we do to serve the community makes her a integral and cherished part of the club. We thank both Rick and Kimberly for they do for the club and community!

Welcome new member George Kakkanatt. He is a quiet man but watch out when he talks with his intelligence! Say hi to him and get to know one of our newest club members.
 
We will no longer be using zoom for online meetings. We have switched to Webex and the link is on the website. This will be effective as of now.
 
It is amazing sometimes how we can get past presidents to keep on keep’n on = Bill Griffin is now our new club Historian. He is the perfect experienced club member for this job having done a few things in the club like - past president, ADG currently, speaker coordinator for years, membership chair, and other club positions over 44 years of Rotary club service. Send him all items and pics you feel are a part of our club history that we need to keep. Thank You Mr. Bill!!

To join via Webex:

  2. Follow the prompts
  3. When asked for meeting password enter SLRotary (case sensitive)
  4. Select the audio method and join the meeting

The Sylvia Whitlock Leadership Award honors one member per year who has Demonstrated extraordinary success in the advancement of women in Rotary.

West University Meal Packing Event Sept 2

West University Club is hosting a meal packing event on September 2nd @ 9am at Rise Against Hunger Houston office, 8901 Jameel, Houston, Tx 77040.
 
They still need more hands, and I know we've got plenty that are willing and able in our great Rotary District.
 
What a great way to meet or catch up with other Rotarians, and the really hard work of planning the event has already been done!

Riley Gaines, NCAA swimmer - Preserve Women's Sports
Downtown Rotary Club of Houston

    Riley Gaines, a former accomplished NCAA swimmer for the University of Kentucky, is determined to preserve women's sports. She has worked with Save Women's Sports and recently launched "The Riley Gaines Center" at the Leadership Institute in Virginia to help fight the movement to "erase women and destroy women’s sports."
Riley ended her Wildcat career as one of the most decorated swimmers in program history. To name just a few of her honors, she:
    Was named to the All-SEC First Team.
    Broke the SEC meet and conference record in the 200 fly (1:51.51) at the SEC Championships en route to earning gold.
    Successfully defended her gold medal in the 200 free (1:42.62) and also took fourth in the 100 free (47.88).
    Had all three of her individual events at SECs be school records.
